Meet Penny McGoey from Becoming Images Photography

Tell us a little about your business:

Documenting the beauty of people’s life journeys is the heartbeat of all I do. I have been photographing professionally for over 12 years, have served thousands of clients, been honored with awards and been privileged to do what I love all over the world. ‘Becoming’ Images is all about the beauty and wonder of transformation, growth and celebrating the unfolding of wings.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

Building genuine relationships with my clients by creating a memorable experience and beautiful imagery to illustrate their stories.

How would you describe your style?

Lifestyle photography is my style -- it is where fine-art photography meets photo-journalism. I consider myself a curator of the moments my clients give me. I am there to capture the emotion, personality and depth of the moment I’ve been invited to share, but I offer a bit of instruction to allow the moment to unfold visually.

How would you describe your personality?

I am a hopeless romantic, eternal optimist and closet hippie! I am easy to talk to and I am made to be an encourager and believer in dreams for myself and others.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

Hiking, music, wine, reading, and spending time with my true companion (of the past 28 years) and our 5 adult kids and 9 practically perfect grand children.

Have you ever worked with a celebrity?

Does the governor of Alaska count as a celebrity? How about my twin grand daughters that are totally instagram famous?!

What trends do you love or would like to see be left behind?

I can get enough of the Boho style and the entire vibe that it encapsulates; it inspires me. I am an I-Product freak along with the rest of the universe! I hope that cosmetic surgery is a trend that dies… we are wonderfully made…  just the way we are.

If you met with a bride and groom and literally had ONE minute to tell them why they should use your company, what would you say?

I am radically in love with love and that is a game changer when I work with couples. I help make you feel relaxed and at ease from day 1 and when I show up to your wedding day -- my couples have expressed that it felt like a friend was there to celebrate with them. I bring over 12 years and 150 weddings of experience to my clients and I give them a beautiful experience along with stunning images.

Describe the most challenging event you’ve done?

I would say that photographing an outdoor wedding in the rainforests of southeast Alaska on a downpour day was the toughest event I’ve ever photographed. My bride was sobbing. The wedding was off-schedule more than an hour. The wedding planner couldn’t get the tents to stay up in the wind. The tent actually poured a bucket worth of rain water down my back while I was photographing the vows in the center of the aisle. The images turned out beautifully and my sweet couple now has a baby on the way, so I guess challenging events don’t equal long-term struggle. ;)

What would previous clients say was the main reason they chose your company?

My clients have all expressed that they appreciated the way I made them and their guests feel comfortable, that they loved their images, and that I was easy to work with.

What tips or advice can you give couples planning their big day?

Keep your focus on building a beautiful friendship that will equal a happy, healthy marriage while you are planning your wedding day. Keep your wedding authentic to who you are as a couple and focus on building in little moments of gratitude to one another and to the people who love you and are there to celebrate your love.
