How to Budget for Your Wedding Dress

How to Budget for Your Wedding Dress

Your wedding may have been your gossamer dream since girlhood, but when it comes time to plan and implement the event, it is very real and extremely challenging. Weddings can be amazingly expensive so having a budget is critical. Know from the beginning what you will spend on the entire celebration. It’s then a bit easier to know what part of that total you should consider for your wedding dress.

Get Help

Fortunately, you can use the internet to shop, study, look, and learn online about everything from wedding favors to where to buy those teeny disposable cameras for the lowest price. There are also wedding budget worksheets available to assist you in putting each expense item in its line. Typically, your wedding dress will amount to 12 to 15 percent of your budget. This is, of course, flexible. In other words, you can cut expenses in other places if you want that gown you’ve been dreaming about since you were seven.

Go to a Sample Sale

If you think shopping on Black Friday is an adventure, wait until you arrive at a big name designer trunk or sample sale on wedding dresses. You may even have seen videos of otherwise nice ladies scrapping, wrestling and becoming down-right cranky over these lovingly used floor-model dresses. Go prepared to buy on the spot. An easier way is to visit wedding gown retailers online that hold sample sales you can access from your home computer. Its lots less violent and you can still save from 25 to 95 percent on the cost of the wedding dress.

Why Not Used?

Wedding dresses are meant to be used once then entombed in plastic for the rest of your life. If you’re a practical bride, this seems to be silly. To that end, look at consignment shops and “new to me” type boutiques. Often a used dress can be had for pittance.

Something Borrowed

On the other hand, if your mother’s gown is currently hanging around her closet, perhaps you can borrow it for your big day. This adds an extra layer of sentiment to the nuptials and the wedding dress costs you zilch…well, perhaps some alterations and cleaning costs, but very little. Think also of the brides you’ve known. Friends and co-workers may have a dress that can be borrowed or bought outright for a song.

A wedding dress budget can be successfully and painlessly pared down to size with some creative and practical thinking.
